I’m headed up to far northern Wisconsin (also known as the “North Woods”) for a few days later this week. The town I am staying in is called Hurley, and is right near the border of Wisconsin and Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. I had this simple vision of the area being woodsy and idyllic, along with what I imagined would be coastline areas along Lake Superior. Coincidentally, it turns out my Dad is very familiar with the area (his grandparents used to have/rent a summer cottage nearby — across the border in Ironwood, MI) and he said the area used to be pretty rough and tumble back in the day (which made me even more excited to visit!)… he said the major industries up there were logging and mining, and there were a lot of bars and other haunts working men “enjoy.” Now I am getting Twin Peaks vibes and can’t wait!
I need to find some North Woods inspired ghost stories to read aloud there at night. I hear the stars up there are amazing too.
